THE VERDICT THAT SENTENCE THE FORMER IRAQI LEADER SADDAM HUSSEIN TO DEATH SHOULD BE EMBRACED BY THE WHOLE OF HUMANITY
The 21st century is a proliferation of dictators and brutal leaders on the run worldwide. But with the radar of transnational civil society, they are mostly spotted and put under the dock. It was only last week that former Chilean Dictator General Pinochet was put under house arrest for crimes against humanity committed during his tenure as president of Chile. Whiles the Pinochet conundrum was the theme of the international media last week, the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s indictment and trial was also nearing to a verdict.
It should be recalled that the one time most feared, and powerful man in the Middle East, used chemical and biological weapons against his own citizens killing thousands. The hypocritical former leader also waged an eight year war against neighboring Iran using chemical and biological weapons killing thousands of Iranian citizens. It should also be recalled in the early 1990’s when he ruthlessly invaded Kuwait killing many, and taken many hostage whilst burning thousands of oil wells.
As the world awaits the verdict for one of the worst dictators of our times since the Second World War, a high court in Iraq announced that their former Leader Saddam Hussein was to be put to death by hanging. The one time untouchable icon in Iraq remained defiant as the verdict was read shouting “ALLAHU AKBAR” meaning “God is Great”.
Now that the former tyrant is sentenced to death thousands of global citizens rejoiced in support of the verdict whilst many others maintain a strong opposition to the sentencing. What does that mean for the rest of the world? Is that not a signal to other dictators, tyrants and brutal leaders around the world? As mentioned last week in the Pinochet case, it is poetic justice taking its course. What goes around comes around. The verdict that sentenced him to death is therefore a historic moment that should be embraced by all. The world is changing and leaders out there who committed crimes against humanity should understand that sooner or later they shall be held accountable for all their actions.
LONG LIVE THE CIVILIZED INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY. DOWN WITH ALL TYRANTS AND DICTATORS AROUND THE CIVILIZED WORLD.
